A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE ARTIST

1. What do you do when you’re not making art? (Day job etc...).

When I'm not making art I am the Director of the Michigan Masonic Museum and Library in Grand Rapids.

2. Why do you make art?

I make art because I am addicted to joy. The act of creating art is like a shot of joy right into the bloodstream.

3. What inspires you?

I am inspired by intuition, exploration, and the dynamics of creation. I get inspired by the fact that I can begin with nothing, not even a thought, and end up with something that impacts me emotionally. If my art does that for someone else as well, that's icing on the cake! Mechanically, I find music inspires me when I paint. I listen to various types of music and the energy of any particular art piece can be affected by the energy of whatever music I might be listening to at the time.

4. What/who are your influences?

Though I constantly try to explore my own unique and evolving artistic voice/style, I can always notice underlying influences to my work from other abstract artists like Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Mark Rothko.

5. If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would it be?

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky.
