A FEW THINGS ABOUT THE ARTIST

1. What do you do when you’re not making art? (Day job etc...).

When I'm not painting, I'm teaching biology and chemistry at Grandville High School.

2. Why do you make art?

I paint because it calms my spirit, stimulates my brain, and brings me joy.

3. What inspires you?

I find inspiration in things and situations that I find beautiful. I've always loved flowers and before we moved to a condo downtown I had huge flower beds. Now that we live in downtown Grand Rapids, I love the feel of community and connection that's part of city life.

4. What/who are your influences?

My biggest influence is Rob VanderZee, my art mentor. Historically, I enjoy and try to incorporate technique and style from John Singer Sargent, Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Antonio Mancini.

5. If you could meet anyone dead or alive who would it be?

I would like to meet John Singer Sargent and get some tips. :)
