YASUO KUNIYOSHI
(1889 - 1953) Kuniyoshi was born in Japan and immigrated to the United States in 1906, choosing not to attend military school in Japan. He attended the Arts Students League in New York, and is known for his paintings, photographs, and printmaking. Around 1930, he built a home and studio in Woodstock, New York, where he was an active part of the artistic community for the rest of his life. In 1948, he became the first living artist to have a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
